If there ever was a magic wand, your story is it!
I have come to know that the slogan "your story matters" on World Pulse is not just a cliche, it is so very true. From generations to generations, story telling has been the main tool for passing down values, morals and traditions. And even more, people connect through storytelling. As social beings, we humans will have to relate, know others and be known. Though each of us are unique in every since of the word, we have many shared characteristics of which one is to communicate our stories.
Telling our stories is important and powerful and especially as women on their change making journey. When we tell our stories, we tell of where we have been. We might have failed or made mistakes, we might have been hurt or hurt others, or found ourselves in situations people ordinarily would be ashamed of or want to hide. If we can look back and be able to put words to our stories, that's bravery. Our pains and hurts begin to loose their power over us, we begin to rise from being shackled by our past.
Telling stories of where we are presently shows self awareness and acknowledgement of progress from our past . It tells others our intentions and issues that we have prioritized. This can motivate others to actions of partnership or collaborations because from the stories of where we are ,they see what's possible to achieve.
Sharing stories of our dreams tells of the future we envisage. Dreams are contagious. They inspire hope and resilience as they give us glimpses of what can be. We can knit a tapestry of our dreams and they become like shining stars in a dark sky.
Telling our stories will mean us accepting our stories first. We must take ownership of our stories irrespective of which point of our journey we are at. If you can not accept your story, who will? Taking ownership of our story is like personally endorsing our own story. That personal validation is vital, because then it takes away the need to filter or exergerate our stories. Just because we went through it makes it valid. It is our story. It is us. It doesn't have to be like someone else's. As long as information, learnings, inspiration, motivation , hope , encouragement and connections can be gotten from them, it is important to share our stories.
Stories are so powerful that they outlive the owners. Years after, they can still be potent enough to go to places the tellers never went, enter the hearts of audiences that the tellers never met, and inspire change that the tellers never imagined. What other super power could be this phenomenal?
When we tell our stories we remind others that we are all humans after all. And That promotes vulnerability and empathy .We who share our stories are reminded that receiving and giving grace is part of life.
Our stories might be of disappointments we have faced, bad decisions we made that did not work out well, or how we handled challenges. Someone will read or hear these stories and relate deeply to our vulnerability. Some other will read of our failures and then knows which way not to go. People will find living proofs of people to learn from. A story has the power to break the shackles of untold stories and give others a license to share their own stories. Our stories are like tools in a tool box.We and others can Use them to navigate challenges as they come. And we can change the trajectory for ourselves and others.
When we share , it will be clear where we were, where we are and what we are becoming. That is personal growth! That is our brand.
Many a story has been distorted because we thought it unworthy to share. Many a story lying fallow because we refuse to share, this denying it it's powers. The call here is to share. Start from anywhere. Share about anything. You will be pleasantly surprised at the magic it will work. Your story is your superpower. Use it!
