Women leading women
Woven throughout Nigeria's history- including the era of its colonial rule, are strong strands of civic movements which shaped the trajectory of the nation, and resulted in significant socio-political impacts. Most of these movements were led or instigated by women: The Aba Women's Revolt; the Abeokuta Women Revolt; the Iva Valley Massacre; the Pullen Tax Strike; the Cola tax; CLO'S campaign against military rule; Occupy Nigerian Women have been at the forefront of shaping the nation's political narratives and advancing the cause of social justice and equity accorded the recognition that they deserve for their role in building the nation.
Beere documents one of these iconic moments in the rich history of Nigeria's civic movements. the Abeokuta women's revolt of 1946-8, was one of the longest sustained and most impactful protest against bad governance. It is a story of courage displayed by ordinary women with an extraordinary objective resistance against corrupt and unfair taxation by the colonial administration, the abdication of a corrupt king, and a demand for representation in governance. They got them all.
Nigeria however appears to have made 360 degree retrogressive turn back to corruption, human rights violations, taxation without representation for its women, and a tragic shrinking of its civic space. It is our hope that Beere will remind us all of how far we had come and what happens when women lead,
