Some 33% of Ugandan girls and young women affected by poverty miss school during their periods. They can’t afford proper sanitary towels, so they are using scraps of old fabric, toilet paper, banana leafs, cotton wool or even newspaper. Fearing embarrassing leaks, they stay home from school and miss out on learning. Many eventually drop out of school.
