Like Ants

PulseWire brings together women from all over the globe, and as a result, there is an amazing capacity for us to share our strengths and help to carry our weaknesses together. It is truly amazing to watch ants, such small insects (and I do not intend to imply that women are small), carry something three or four times their weight. They do it together, and it is, and always has been amazing to see what people can do when they work together. I see online communities as a resource and a place to exchange ideas and solutions, a place to turn to for help, and inspiration.

One of the greatest barriers for me personally has been defining my community. Is my community the place I live? (If so, I have moved nearly every 6 months for the past 3 years) Or is it where I grew up? Or is it where my parents are from? I am now moving into a phase in life in which I will be stationary. I will be teaching in Ladakh for at least two years, beginning next week in October. I am entering into a new community that feels foreign. I will have to interact and learn in order to know who my community is, and then look, listen and learn about what the challenges are that need to be changed.

In many communities there seems to be a gap in defining, or seeing clearly what it is that people desire to get done. For this, I believe we must imagine and dream, create visions and dreams for what we want. Slowly, and surely, one step at a time and one day after the other, if we are clear about our vision and we take small even steps, we will continue to come closer to it.

Let us be like ants and share our visions and burdens in order to come closer to the world we dream of.
