My first menstruation

I still remember my first day of menstruation. I am from Nepal and menstruation is taken as impurity till today. I am sharing my story which is from 24 years back. So, you all can imagine how the situation was at that time. When i had a period for the first time, i was scared. It was because my mother never talked about it beforehand and i thought that i was having some serious illness when i saw the blood.

I was then asked to leave home as we cannot see male members of the family during first period. I refused to go to my maternal uncle's home but my mom was so sticked to the idea that we have to go away from our own home. I started crying to convince her however she was not convinced. So i went to live to my uncle's home. I was not allowed to touch and come outside my room during the day time as we cannot see sun. I was also not allowed to see my cousin brothers, uncle and grand dad.

It was kind of living at custody as the room had to be kept dark. My dishes were regarded dirty and it had to be clean by myself. So, the overall experience of mine was terrific. The things are improving in my community and country but still we need to go very far to make everyone realize that having menstruation is not impurity. It is a natural process. Girls should not be sent away from family however they should be kept close to family and given special care.
